Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • General


    • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).

    • The text adheres to all the requirements as outlined in the Author Guidelines (summarized below for your convenience).

  • Format & Structure


    The submission file needs to be in .docx file format.

    [Empirical articles only]
    The paper follows the structure stated in https://journal.trialanderror.org/for-authors/#structure:
    • 5 keywords

    • a take-home message (maximum 100 words), where you summarize the key take-away you want to communicate with your paper, readable for non-experts

    • an abstract (between 150 and 250 words)

    • an original purpose section (maximum 250 words), where you summarize the original intentions and/or aims of your research

    • an introduction, a method section, a discussion, and a conclusion.

  • Attribution, Anonymization, & Consent



    • The names of all authors, affiliations, and contact details have been excluded from the submitted manuscript. Anonymity has been ensured by following the guidelines as stated in https://journal.trialanderror.org/for-authors/#double-blind-review.
      (For empirical, reflection, and meta-research articles)

    • All authors listed have given approval to have their name attributed to the manuscript(s) being submitted and agree to publication. More information: https://journal.trialanderror.org/for-authors/#authorship.

    • In case of using patient case reports or other document types in which an individual or a group of individuals can be identified, individuals must have signed consent forms, or had had their guardian do so.

  • Tables and Figures



    • Tables and figures are all cited in the main text and included within the text document.

    • When using any third-party-owned materials, they are all identified with appropriate credit lines, and permission has been obtained from the copyright holder to publish it in all formats of the journal.

    • All figures have a resolution of at least 200dpi (300dpi or above preferred).

    • Image files are in one of the following formats: JPG, TIFF, GIF, PNG, EPS, SVG (to maximise quality, source (SVG, EPS) and lossless (PNG, TIFF) formats are strongly preferred).

    • (Optional) Ideally, a sans-serif font is used for the figure labels.

  • Citations



    [Empirical, Meta-Research, Reflection]

    • Citation and bibliography are in accordance with the APA Author-Date citation system
      (https://apastyle.apa.org/style-grammar-guidelines/citations/basic-principles/author-date).

    • If you have used a citation manager (Zotero, Mendeley, EndNote, etc.) for your citations, either keep the citations in the manuscript untouched, or include an export of your bibliography with your submission in .bib (BibLaTeX preferred), .end, or .ris format.

      This is not required, but will hasten the production time of your paper.


  • Data sharing



    [Empirical, Meta-Research articles only]

    For a paper in which you have collected, processed, or in any other way generated data, you are required to either

    • Publish your data under an open license on Zenodo, OSF, Github, Gitlab, or any other publically accessible resource and include a link to it in your manuscript. Preferably use a DOI to link to your dataset, if one is not provided JOTE will assign one for you.

    • Include your data in your submission and consent to JOTE publishing your dataset on our OFS under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license or another open license of your choice.

    • Provide an explanation as to why you it is not possible, pratical, or legal for you to share (a censored version of) your dataset in the "Comment to the Editor"



    Empirical submissions and Meta-Research submissions which involve producing, reproducing, or validating (parts of) experimental data without accompanying datasets or explanation as to why said datasets cannot be provided will not be accepted until these conditions are met.

  • Rejected Grant Application Specifics



    • Nothing has been changed and/or deleted. If anything has been changed, please specify in the 'Comments for the Editor'.

  • Open Peer Review


    • You agree that the peer review comments and your response to said comments will be made publically available.

Please ensure that your document(s) and information provided throughout the submission are in accordance with the Submission Preparation Checklist above and with the complete Author Guidelines as described in https://journal.trialanderror.org/for-authors.

The names and email addresses entered in this journal site will be used exclusively for the stated purposes of this journal.

We do NOT sell or share your data.
